The simple answer is this - if you want to fly anywhere internationally, YES! The problem is a lot of people think that does not apply to them, since they are just cruising round trip from an American city, or they are only travelling to Mexico by car.. for a few days..... whatever. Although you don't expect it, if something occurred on that road trip, or cruise that made it necessary for you to FLY home, you'd be in trouble. The latest in passport "alternatives" are not valid when FLYING out of the country... and as we all know, accidents DO happen. Don't take the risk - if your travels take you to a foreign country, then get a passport!
They are good for ten years, and will give you the freedom to travel anywhere with minimal hassle.
